My usual size is L, but this trial experiment was indeed surprising. What I observed is that a Tommy Hilfiger Medium top comes bulging down the shoulders than Zara and GAP medium tops, which fit perfectly.  

 As for bottoms, they can be tight on an L person at the hips (both), and the legs portion below the knee (narrow jeans).

Hence GAP dress fits me perfectly due to the upper L and lower XL kind of proportion for my body type.
