brief #4b: Writing Craft
challenge: Renaming 10 books (I thought of multiple options but should there be room for one choice, consider first choices for each book)
1. What Young India Wants (Author: Chetan Bhagat)- India for Millennials/ The India Project
Because the book specifically talks about the political climate of India, bookish study of society and economy, and impact of youth demographic on these dyanmics.
Also the second choice highlights the pun intended on how government development schemes are ‘projects’ to give a hint of political content.
2. Making India Awesome (Author: Chetan Bhagat)- Our Constitution 2.0 / India 2.0
Because this book speaks of inclusivity in progress of nation towards not just politics and economy, but also society that is still healing from colonization, feminism, minorities, LGBTQ and power of the youth
all-round.
3. Looking For Alaska (Author: John Green)- Miles To Go/ The Labyrinth/ After-life 2.0
Just like how the original title is a namesake of one of its characters (Alaska Young) and deemed to be symbolic; I was inspired to reverse the namesake title to Miles to Go which can clearly be understood as a tribute to the protagonist, Miles Halter and at the same time, miles is a measurement of long distances, suggesting travel into the unknown and vagueness (unlike previous title where Alaska as a territory in geographical context beyond American and Canadian borders being compared to beyond life and death in spiritual context can only be a fan theory, is not confirmed).
The Labyrinth refers to the inescapable puzzle of human psyche, that tries to understand forces beyond known- such as death and afterlife, through grief.
4. Grimm Tales (Author: Philip Pullman)- Fairy Tales for Adults
Because, this is an actual uncensored but abridged account of the original German Fairy Tales by Grimm Brothers. (Reader discretion advised). However, because it is nearly the uncensored (translation and interpretation) there are controversial and violent image-wrecking words.
5. Let it Snow (Author: John Green)- Is it Warm Enough? / Some Tales Got No Chill
Because of the festive sentiment of Christmas and the winter season coming into foreplay with your stereotypical winter romance stories, I thought of going with these cool edgy titles (all 3 implying the same reason)
6. I am Malala (Author: Malala Yousafzai)- My Pen, My Aegis / That Woman with a Book and Pen/ Through the Terrain of Pakistan
Since it focuses on how Malala pioneered women’s education in the hilly terrains of Pakistan, also known to be the place where the Taliban influence and affect peace of mind in Pakistan from its Western frontier: Peshawar.
7. The Mark of Athena (Author: Rick Riordan)- The Curse of the Parthenon/ The Curse of Arachne
Because it is a series of a demigod retrieving her godly mother, the wisdom goddess Athena’s stolen statue in modern Charleston from its original base- The Temple of Athena and Nike in Athens also popularly known as Parthenon. (The Curse of the Parthenon)
The Curse of Arachne because Arachne is the cursed woman-turned-spider whose wrath the daughter of Athena must face as nemesis.
8. The Son of Neptune (Author: Rick Riordan)- The Trident at Bay
Since it focuses on Percy Jackson, the son of Poseidon (Greek god of the sea)’s arrival at Camp New Rome in California’s Bay Area. The trident is associated as a symbol of Poseidon.
9. The House of Hades- Through the Gates of Hell
Because it talks of how the protagonist, Percy Jackson and his love interest, Annabeth Chase fall into the deep abyss of the Greek Underworld, and their traumatizing yet thrilling journey through literal hell to close the Gates of Hell while their friends attempt to close the gates from the other side- the world of the living.
10. Half Girlfriend (Author: Chetan Bhagat)- Girl Friend
Because it focuses on the rocking uncertain dynamics of a relationship between the protagonist and his crush. It’s not no strings attached, that is in the end. More like he can’t accept no means no.
